This year three Ligier JS P2s were entered for the FIA WEC: one Ligier JS P2-Nissan by RGR Sport by Morand and two Ligier JS P2-Nissans by Tequila Patron ESM. One or two Ligiers finished on the LM P2 podium in eight out of the nine races in the 2016 championship!
Once again the Ligier JS P2s were fighting at the front in the final round on the Bahrain circuit this weekend. They were involved in a no-holds-barred battle for victory with their two main rivals, the no. 36 Alpine A460-Nissan run by the 2016 champions, Signatech Alpine, and the no. 26 G-Drive Racing Oreca 05-Nissan, which emerged victorious in the last race.
RGR Sport, in the top 3 throughout almost the whole race which it led for some 20 laps, clinched second place in the Bahrain 6 Hours this weekend. Thus, the team has racked up seven podium finishes including victories at Silverstone and Mexico in its first year's racing. In addition, this result has given the fledgling Mexican outfit second place overall in the FIA Endurance Trophy for LM P2 Teams.
The nos 30 and 31 Ligier JS P2s entered by Extreme Speed Motorsports also stunned onlookers this weekend, and the American team had a top-3 finish or even victory in their sights thanks to their performance. In particular, the no. 31 Ligier-Nissan crew drove an outstanding race as they led the P2 category from the 102nd to the 169th lap. But it all went south for the American-entered car with around 15 laps to go to the chequered flag. In the end the no. 26 G-Drive Racing Oreca 05 snatched victory followed by the no. 43 RGR Sport Ligier JS P2 and the no. 26 Signatech Alpine A460.
The next rendezvous for the FIA WEC is the Prologue. It will take place on the Monza circuit on 24-25 March 2017, and the new Ligier JS P217 complying with the new regulations will be present.
